The course is offered online, with skills laboratory and simulation sessions held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.on Mondays.The student must schedule, outside of class time, one in-hospital emergency department rotation and two EMS rotations where they will observe and assist with the assessment and management patients.

This course provides the basic knowledge and skills necessary for individuals to obtain certification from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) which will lead to Iowa certification as an EMT. The EMSLRC EMT program adheres to the 2009 National EMS Education Standards.
