The course is offered online, with skills laboratory and simulation sessions held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays. The student must schedule outside of class time: one in-hospital emergency department rotation and two EMS rotations where they will observe and assist with the assessment and management of patients.
This course provides the basic knowledge and skills necessary for individuals to obtain certification from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) which will lead to Iowa certification as an EMT. The EMSLRC EMT program adheres to the 2009 National EMS Education Standards.
Testing/Certification
Upon successful completion of the course, student candidates will be eligible to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians advanced psychomotor and written examinations leading to National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians and State of Iowa certification as an EMT.

The EMT Education Program offerend by the EMS Learning Resources Center at UI Hospitals & Clinics has been approved for private student loans. You are not required to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Please visit the website for the University of Iowa Office of Student Financial Aid for more information. Short-term secured loans may be available through local lending institutions to assist qualified applicants.
This class will run 16 weeks online. Weeks start at 0000hr and end at 2359hr Sunday including the required skills lab days.

A MANDATORY orientation will be held Wednesday, August 13 from 0830-1630. Attendance is required; no exceptions. Please do not apply if you are not able to attend the MANDATORY orientation.
